Marct 🌱 - The AI Opportunities/Jobs Thread Is Back! - Curated by Alex Ker
Heya!
Alex here, and I’m reviving Marct, a curated thread for a first look at exciting AI-related startup opportunities on a biweekly basis. I ran this newsletter for a few editions in 2021, and you previously subscribed (thank you!).
Quick reintroduction:
My name is Alex Ker. Previously, I was Fellow at Bloomberg Beta, Editor at Stanford HAI, and ML/Engineering at LaunchDarkly, Neurable, and MIT. I founded P-ai.org, an AI/ML ideas incubator with 35+ technical projects, where I placed 35+ members in top industry/research positions. Marct is an effort to do this more scalably.
Format and Purpose:
Each edition will feature select opportunities (some only available through my network and unlisted), and analyze why you should apply. I’ll also share ideas for fun portfolio projects, resources and courses for transitioning/breaking in, summarize new research and predict their applications, and write essays related to AI, psychology, philosophy, entrepreneurship, learning, and human progress.
My hope is to democratize access to machine intelligence opportunities, increase process transparency, and help everyone improve decision-making in choosing the best trajectory. I’m constantly going through trying to iterate on my decision-making and sense-making abilities, so this is a workbench for me to do so:)
I look forward to having you on board and I'm always open to feedback on style, format, content, or anything that you would like to see.
This week has been very thrilling with Generative AI and Search taking the spotlight, namely, Google’s Bard vs. Microsoft’s Bing+ChatGPT. Who do you think will win and why? Let me know by replying!
Full-time
Cohere - ML Engineer (Remote): Advanced LLMs
AK's thoughts: Building the LLM platform with robust APIs reading billions of webpages; collaboration opportunities with other organizations (multi-year partnership with Google Cloud); nonprofit opportunities; aggressively hiring in recession; exceptional founding team (co-founder Aiden Gomez wrote Attention Is All You Need paper); intersection of research + production NLP.
You.com - Security Engineer (Remote): Private and customized search powered by AI
AK's thoughts: Try the YouChat, or the suite of tools like YouCode, YouWrite, YouImagine, along with search features that are so much better than Google; founded by Richard Socher (CTO at Salesforce); hard to find a better dataset/place to apply advances in NLP; hockey-stick growth; who wouldn’t want to challenge someone like Google?:)
Runway ML - Sr. ML Engineer (Remote): Generative AI storytelling and content creation
AK’s thoughts: AI x Art; making professional video and content creation accessible; highly creative team interested in unlocking story-telling abilities; thinks about feedback loops (intentional human-in-the-loop feedback or RL is what will differentiate companies); designing beautiful interfaces for models to be served.
Today, Generative AI takes its next big step forward.
Introducing Gen-1: a new AI model that uses language and images to generate new videos out of existing ones.

Internships:
Freenom - Clinical Informatics and Data Science Intern: Next-gen blood tests to detect cancer using multiomics platform and machine learning
AK's thoughts: Unique multiomics platform to detect cancer with high accuracy; leveraging AI to build better and more accurate diagnostics—the first blood test will detect early-stage colorectal cancer and advanced adenomas; research cutting-edge bio x AI, the next frontier.
C3 AI - MBA Interns (Business Development, AI Solutions, Product Management, Strategy Interns) (Redwood City): Enterprise-scale AI applications
AK's thoughts: One of the strongest enterprise AI companies; accelerate AI adoption by building applications that are efficient/cost effective; turnkey applications like AI CRM, Supply-Chain, Sustainability, Oil and Gas Suites; impressive list of partners e.g. airforce, koch.
Alex's Take
This week has taught us a lot. The AI arms race between companies (whether big or small) comes down to these key levers (which should determine where you want to work)
hardware
current dataset (if proprietary or unique)
human-in-the-loop and reinforcement learning (how new data are being added)
go-to-marketing/marketing abilities (especially salient demos!)
intuitive interfaces and UI/UX
